It was an interesting time to be a journalist.

In the early 2000s, the Web became arguably the most influential invention since electricity, spreading its sticky, spidery threads across all facets of life—reimagining communication, globalization, education, and media-sharing in ways never thought possible.

As Kevin Kelly wrote in Wired magazine in 2005:

“The scope of the Web today is hard to fathom. How could we create so much, so fast, so well?”

In two short years (from 2005 to 2007), a slew of juggernaut online spaces appeared, including Twitter, YouTube, Spotify, Google Maps, Goodreads, and Reddit.
